I received an e-mail to give permission to use my skins on this site.
http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/mini_skins.html

I have no skins posted anywhere that I know of and became weary about the site. When I checked it out, Dangeruss and Treetog's Winamp Skins are being featured. I'm not sure if they gave permission, or if the site is just posting their work.

That's Nikolay from Media Jukebox fame. They just came out with a new version (7.0) that uses winamp skins instead of WindowBlinds skins. He's only looking for winamp skins to post on his site for his customers. They seem to be real nice folks there and they get a lot of downloads (my "Doreen's TV" had over 41,000) so I'd recomend letting them have any winamp skins you've got.

They don't deserve them by taking them then asking.

Someone posted that very same question on that site. It appears to be legit. You can find it in the Talkback forum.

Is that what they did l0c? I thought they were asking first.

Well I have found this problem myself,. I have a Desktop Microsoft plus theme i submitted to one server, [EZThemes.com] & now I am getting e mails from people telling me the download link is broken or corrupt. Except for the fact they arnt downloading it from there site at all but from a place I haven't submitted to.

Seems they just hijacked the theme and posted on their site as being a legitimate upload by me, when I have no knowledge of it. !

I assumed that was the case. Maybe I'm wrong...

Playing the devils advocate for a moment... Since skins are generally considered free, most people are going to assume that they are public domain and can be redistributed without permission. And since they are giving due credit to the authors I really do not see what the harm is. I personally would take it as a form of flattery that someone thought my skin was good enough that they wanted to get other people to use it.

And if for some reason you do not with your skins to be redistributed by other people I suggest placing a readme file in your skin stating that its not to be redistributed without permission and it would be a good idea to put that statement in the description as well just to be on the safe side.

Anyway, this is just my opinion and I am sure some of you will disagree.

In this particular case I wouldn't have objected since I've already given permission in the past for them to use my work and I find them very considerate and responsive. However, I went and checked to see when they actually posted my skin and found that it went onto their site After I had responded to their email wiith permission to do so. So it's certainly not an issue in this case.

I agree with Pat that most people don't think of it as an issue since the work is available for free download. Personal sites of skinners usually have a terms clause which clearly states that you need to get permission to redistribute the skins. Maybe it would help if there was a statement on every skin site stating that you may download from this site for your own personal use only, and that any redistribtion or other use requires the permission of the copyright holder. Although, the worst cases of abuse are when the file is modified or the author credits are changed. The dweebs that do those things probably would anyway and that's where vigillance is the only answer.

But I read on the comment board that Dangeruss was paid for it.. if that's true, then it certainly isn't ripping.

I mean, if they're lying that's one thing.. but if these guys were paid to post their stuff, why is the website's name being slandered here? Meanwhile I watched a rip stay in the Dashboard forum for like a weak here before being taken down. It's gone now though.

Paid??? hmmm...... maybe I'll stop being so nice to these guys

Well I dunno if it's true, but it was on their message boards as of a few days ago.

I checked and aparently Russ did the UI design for them and got paid for that. Good for him!
and that makes more sense than making them pay for winamp skins that are posted here for free....
